I love libraries. They are my kind of place and the people who use them are my kind of people. At the Blackstone, there’s always something happening, something to learn and a great book waiting to be discovered. Just wander in. You don’t need an appointment and it’s free!

Stay home with a book? You don’t have to tell me twice. A book in front of a fireplace. Or next to a glass of wine. Or on my couch. Or really, anywhere. (Bathtub? Why not?) On October 26, you can engage in one of life’s greatest pleasures AND raise money for the Blackstone Library. All of us, readers and writers, will be grateful for your help and you… you will have the perfect evening.

As both a writer and a lifetime reader, nothing scares me more than worrying that our libraries will lose much-needed support from the community. So I’m delighted to co-sponsor this year’s Snuggle In and Read Halloween Ball in support of the Blackstone Library! Grab a book, make a donation, and join the party!

I can’t think of a better way to spend an autumn afternoon than to be cuddled up in comfy clothes while reading a new or classic novel in my recliner. To open a book is to unlock a door to a new, exciting world, an escape into the distant past, to a modern adventure, or into a futuristic fantasy, and the key awaits you at your public library. Don’t miss your chance to attend the Snuggle In and Read Halloween Ball!

The library is one of our most important community resources; it’s not just for checking out books. You can take classes, participate in book clubs, get tech help and play games. Most important, kids can discover the joys of story time, creating lifelong readers. I have been going to Blackstone since I was a child—I remember distinctly the impressiveness of this grand building and the warmth of the librarians and staff within. Help keep this important space vital for our community and future generations by staying home, reading a book, and donating on October 26 (or any day in October!).

I remember in my youngest years, my mother would prepare me for bed as we “snuggled in” to read a book. Fairy tales, Little Golden Books, and nursery rhymes were adventures to dreamland. Once I was on my way with words, I got my own library card and my world expanded even more. I encourage everyone to take advantage of supporting our wonderful Blackstone Library by participating in the “Snuggle In and Read Halloween Ball.” I imagine so many ways to enjoy this with friends at any age. Read a new book or revisit a favorite. By all means, let’s make it a party!

I love when a book succumbs to being read. Its pages soften as it forms itself to me. It knows it’s mine. Libraries enable my reading pleasure to continue endlessly! As a parent, I love that libraries provide resources and activities for my children. As a writer, I am grateful that the Blackstone Library is supportive of local authors. This October, put on those fuzzy slippers and #snuggleinandread.

When I was younger, the library was my home away from home. I loved to get lost in the magical stories of Roald Dahl, C.S. Lewis, and Marguerite Henry. Maybe that’s why you’ll still sometimes find me in the Young Adult section at the library. (Truth be told, I can’t get enough of Ransom Riggs’s Miss Peregrine series.) But even my favorite grown-up books tend to wander into magic realism — like Lisa See’s Peony in Love, Sarah Perry’s Melmoth, and A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. My choice for Snuggle In and ReadThe House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende.

Oh, I love and feel so proud of the beautiful, historic Blackstone, our gem of a library! As a children’s book author and illustrator, many of them “FACTION”, the library’s resources and the fabulous reference and children’s department librarians shared and supported my journey with unending enthusiasm. They helped me do research, and discover FUN facts… the kind that make you say “Wow! I didn’t know that!” about Leaves and Water and Ponds and Shells and Stars and more. I wouldn’t be where I am today without our library! Let’s all snuggle in and read at the JBML October book ball!
