A club for teens who want to make a difference!

Do you want to make a difference in our library community? Do you enjoy reading, crafting & talking about books? Consider joining our Teen Advisory Group! This small counsel of dedicated teen volunteers provide book reviews, vote on books to purchase & more.

Starting in September, on a trial basis, we’re going back to in-person TAG meetings at the library! To help keep families safe, we’re offering a variety of in-person & virtual events this fall @ Blackstone Teen Services. Please remember that all in-person Youth Services events (like this one) will require a mask & registration. A waiting list will open when the event is full. Please be respectful of limited space & only sign up for events you are sure you can attend. If you are sick, please do not attend, but let Miss Sarah know as soon as possible.

We can’t wait to see you @ the library! To sign up for this and other teen events, visit our Teen Services Events Sign Up Page Here.

Awakening to Change: A Social Justice Book Club

Awakening to Change: A Social Justice Book Club

Awakening to Change: A Social Justice Book Club

Thursdays

Thursday, September 16

7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

We are often asked to be the change we want to see in the world, but we can’t change what we can’t see.

As part of our Awakening to Change series, the Blackstone Library is offering a social justice book club. Each month we’ll read a book selected to help us develop a shared understanding of the complex issues surrounding racism. Over the course of several in-depth discussions, we aim to begin understanding the world in a new way.

The series continues in September with So You Want To Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo which guides readers of all races through subjects ranging from intersectionality and affirmative action to “model minorities” in an attempt to make the seemingly impossible possible: honest conversations about race and racism, and how they infect almost every aspect of American life..

The discussion will take place on three Thursdays in September at 7:00 via Zoom. Please be sure to register for all three sessions individually.

The book will be broken up into 3 parts to allow for more in depth and essential conversations.

September  9     Chapters 1-5

September 16    Chapters 6-11

September 23    Chapters 12-17

Copies of the book will be available at the library for you to borrow. You can email programs@blackstonelibrary.org or call (203) 488-1441 ext. 318 to do so.

If you would like to purchase a personal copy for your own social justice library, People Get Ready Books in New Haven will donate 15% of every purchase to the Blackstone Library. Simply visit their website to order, use promo code AWAKENING, and you’ll be supporting both the library and a women and black owned local business. Books can be picked up at the store at 119 Whalley Ave, New Haven CT 203.954.6678
