Description

Photographs of the 1938 hurricane from Short Beach, Stony Creek, Indian Neck and Pine Orchard. The identity of the photographers for most of the pictures in the album are unknown. A number of people took photographs after the storm and many were mass produced and distributed. Some of the Short Beach photos were taken by John V. McClees of Alps Road and are marked on the back. A few of the Indian Neck photographs were taken by Louis Zacher. Some, but not all, of the Stony Creek photos were taken by Cedric Chase. A few scenes from Branford were widely photographed and appeared in published books about the 1938 hurricane- namely, Dr. Wilson Thompson’s house in Branford Point, Knowlton’s garage in Short Beach, the Gregory and Lane cottages at Pine Orchard, and the cottages on Long Point in Stony Creek. Similar views plus many other 1938 hurricane photographs can be found in the Branford Historical Society photograph collection.
